Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up on the heart-breaking loss of his baby son.
In the latest excerpt of his interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, the Manchester United star spoke about more personal moments in his life.
Ronald and his partner, Georgina Rodriguez, welcomed their daughter Bella Esmeralda on April 18.
Rodriguez was due to give birth to twins, however, her and Ronaldo’s son, Angel, sadly passed away during childbirth.
Ronaldo has candidly gone into more detail on the harrowing episode to TalkTV, saying it was one of the worst moments of his life.
He also revealed how he and his partner broke the news to the rest of his family.
He said: “Gio arrived home and the kids start to say where’s the other baby, where’s the other baby?
“The other ones in the beginning, around the table, the kids start to say ‘Mum where is the other baby….’ …and after one week I say let’s be up front and let’s be honest with the kids, let’s say that, Angel, which is his name, he goes to Heaven.”
“You know, when you have a kid you expect that everything will be normal, and you have that problem, it’s… it’s hard, you know, as human being that I am.”
He added: “Piers, probably the worst moment that I passed through my life, since my father died.
“You know, when you have a kid you expect that everything will be normal, and you have that problem, it’s… it’s hard, you know, as human being that I am.”
“Georgina, we had quite difficult moments because we don’t understand why it happened to us. It was difficult to be honest, it was very, very difficult to understand what was going on in that in that period of our life.
“As you know, the football carries on there, so fast, many competitions, the football doesn’t stop. We had many, many competitions.
“And passing through in that moment was probably the most difficult moment that I had in my life. Me and my family, especially Gio [Georgina Rodriguez], that was tough.”
When asked about having to manage the grief of losing their son with celebrating the birth of their daughter, Ronaldo added: “It’s crazy.
“I tried to explain sometimes to my family and even my close friends. I say, I never felt so happy and sad in the same moment. I never felt it. It is hard to explain.”
“So difficult. It’s, you don’t know if you cry or you don’t know if you smile. Because it’s something where you don’t know how to react. You don’t know what to do, to be honest.”
Ronaldo also revealed that he keeps the ashes of his son in a chapel in the basement, where the remains of his dad Jose Dinis Aveiro — who died in 2005 from liver failure — are also kept.
“His ashes are with me, like my Daddy, they are here in the house.
“It is something that I want to hold for the rest of my life and not throw to the ocean or to the sea. I keep with me. They are next to my dad. I have a small church downstairs, a chapel, and I keep my daddy and my son there.”
When asked by Morgan if he talks to them, Ronaldo said: “Yes I do…all the time and they are on my side. You know they help me to be a better man, to be a better person, to be a better father.
“And it’s something that I am really proud of… the message that they send me, especially my son.”
